Many people insured in private health insurance (PKV) are threatened by painful premium increases on 1 January. In October, the PKV Association announced that around two thirds of those insured by private health insurance in Germany have to reckon with contribution increases >/g> of eleven percent on average. In the statutory health insurance scheme, on the other hand, the average additional contribution of currently 1.1 percent will remain unchanged – at least for the coming year.
In order to reach this conclusion, the Institute has calculated the premium income for SHI and private health insurance down to the individual insured person. This has resulted in an average annual per capita increase of 3.2 per cent in the SHI system since 2007 (excluding the federal subsidy financed from tax revenues), whereas in private health insurance the increase was only 3 per cent.
The comparison shows how similar the contributions in both systems developed, as Volker Leienbach, Director of the PKV Association, is quoted by the Süddeutsche Zeitung in this context. In addition, Leienbach pointed out that the SHI system receives automatically increasing contributions every year, while the private health insurance system has to wait until rigid thresholds are exceeded.
